Tuesday Shoesday :: Farewell Edition

Today is my last day as a part of Tuesday Shoesday. From now on, it will be sporadic and occasional. Doing Tuesday Shoesday has definitely helped me fall in love with shoes a little more each week, but writing the post isn't as much fun as it ought to be if I'm going to do it with such regularity. Tuesday Shoesday :: Work and Play

So, I'm with The Stylish Planner, Jeannine Kennedy. I absolutely think the wedding day ought to bring out your best in black. It's all the other events as a wedding planner that you should showcase your sense of style and impeccable eye in brighter colors and bolder patterns. Truthfully, I'm not sure I've been doing that lately...so I've been looking into some shoes that will help complete both looks, the work and the other work...we'll call it play. Because, personally, it feels more like play than work sometimes to get to be a part of the creative and professional process of creating a wedding, doesn't it?

These are my favorite Cole Haan's with concealed Nike Air Technology. And, it's not just wedding planners that recommend them, oh no! My mother-in-law (who is a pediatrician) also swears by them. In fact, I've heard teachers who'll wear them daily in the classroom, too.

So, what's the play counterpart to this shoe? These Ralph Lauren beauties, I'm sure are the evil *ahem* playful match. It looks like duipioni silk and that's enough to make me drool.

Tuesday Shoesday :: Dance All Night

Grant and I started dancing lessons last week. Flat soles required for slipping and sliding in time. Suede recommended. Made me wonder how many of the shoes I've been considering for our wedding would be just as pretty as they are fun to dance in. Most of them = pretty, but not great for dancing. The rest of them = great for dancing, but mostly ugly. So, here are a few I've found that get great marks for both! Would love to hear from anyone who has a pair to recommend!

Here's a little something for the traditional bride in white.

I'm loving this pair from Martinez Valero. I'd dance with Lexie all night long!

Or, for something perfect for the moody, mother-in-law or matron of honor, how about this black pair from Beverly Feldman. Fanciful, indeed! Love the lower heel and the ever-sexy silhouette.

DIY Photobooth

Most brides aren’t usually into following trends and want something out-of-the-box at their weddings, but having a photobooth at your wedding is definitely an exception. They are becoming extremely popular for weddings, birthday parties, and other special events because they provide the guests with entertainment and the host with fun memories.

If you are thinking of having a photobooth at your wedding, there are a couple of elements that you can include to make yours the best it can be. Choose a background that suites your personality as a couple. This could simply be a white sheet set up by a stand, or a colorful background or painted wall. Having the guests stand against the backdrop will add personality to the pictures.

Another element to think about when making your own photobooth is lighting. If you are having an outdoor wedding, then keeping the photobooth outside is the perfect solution! Natural lighting is great and doesn’t cost anything. Another option is to have your photographer take the pictures for your photobooth and they can set up their own lighting.

You can also add props to your photobooth to make them more fun. When you get the pictures back they will be full of your friends and family being silly with the props you left them. In my opinion adding chalk and a chalkboard or a dry erase board is a great way for your guests to leave you fun messages and entertain themselves. You can also add masks, wigs and costumes.

Another option you can choose to do is rent a photobooth instead of making it yourself. This is good because your guests can get the prints automatically, but this option is also more expensive. HubPages has a ton of information on renting photobooths.

Whether you are planning on renting a photobooth or making it yourself, it will definitely be a hit among your guests and a way to show off your personality as newlyweds. We would love to hear about your DIY photobooth experiences!

Tuesday Shoesday :: The Glitter Edition

Tuesday Shoesdays roll around with incredible regularity and with them inspiration from some of the chicest bloggers around. Thank goodness. A few weekends ago I tried on my first pair of Christian Louboutin's. These glittered goddesses come in blues, pink, gold, silver, and several other hues. These seriously wanted to make me cry. Both, because they were almost more beauty than I could handle and because my feet are unaccustomed to a heel of that height. Serious ouch. I have nothing but admiration for the women who rock these down the aisle. I simply could not. But, I love sparkle and I love the variety of colors available to work for any bride.

Don't you just want to put a pair of these glitter pumps on your feet and dance, dance, dance? If you're worried about being gracefully impaired *ahem* like I am, then don't despair. There are other options that will make your toes tingle, while still allowing blood flow.

Yes, there is an opposite extreme to both the pricetag and over-all look of the Louboutin. Meet Tom. Or, more accurately, TOMS glitters in silver and gold.

And, for those who haven't heard of TOMS, you're missing out. They're comfortable, well-made shoes and they're made by an awesome company.

And, though these aren't glitters, I think these images from Rebecca Cash of Captivating Photography illustrate my point. TOMS are cute for weddings, too. Perfect, even, for the right bridal party. And, in these babies you can dance all night long.

Or, if you're not convinced they're fancy enough for you, you can work them into your engagements, like JT and Liz did with Sarah Hess of Fleeting Moments Studio.

Finally, a Giveaway for Moms!

Some of you may have heard me mention this before, but finding dresses for our moms has been one of the bigger challenges for our August wedding. Grant's mom looked and looked and looked, and then right about the time she decided she might just have to wear whatever she could find, she found 2 dresses in one day! And, she looks beautiful in them both. Grant and I were sitting on the couch with his dad when she walked out to show them off and all three of our jaws dropped. I'm so excited for her.

My mom, on the other hand, hasn't been able to do much looking. We send e-mails back and forth about things we've found or flip through a catalog on either end of a telephone, but she hasn't spent as much time in stores as she needs to. See, she's her father's full-time care-giver. And, until a few months ago was taking care of my grandmother as well, when she started needing more help than my family could give her. So, she rarely gets a chance to leave the house.

So, this morning when I saw that Fab Over Fifty was hosting a style makeover for the Mother of the Bride or the Mother of the Groom I was really excited (and I even entered my mom to win!) Old, New, Borrowed, Blue.

Something borrowed, something blue,

Every bride has heard the phrase, and most strive to gather the perfect collection of items that bring luck to the bride on her wedding day. The age old tradition of having something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue in your wedding is thought to complete the special day. These elements of your wedding attire can be very traditional such as items owned by family members, or something new and modern.

Something old can be something that is passed down from generation to generation. Whether this is a garter, embroidered handkerchief, or a piece of jewelry, this is a way of tying family tradition into your wedding and bringing more significance to your special day. One bride photographed by Michael Oppenheim, wore a bracelet made out of the gold from her father’s wedding band. This was a way of adding something special into her wedding while also honoring someone important to her.

Something new for a bride is usually the actual wedding dress. This is the most obvious piece of clothing that is new, but brides also use gifts such as new jewelry given to them before the wedding.

When looking for your “Something borrowed,” choose an item that belongs to someone important to you. That way the item adds more significance to your wedding day. You could borrow a ring or hairpin from your mother, grandmother, or family friend. Traditionally this is someone who holds an important part in your life and is already happily married.

Something blue is where you can get the most creative. Some brides have the blue in their shoes such as these brides from Style Me Pretty and Big Day Plunge. One bride even had the soles of her shoes painted blue so the guests could only catch a glimpse of blue while she was walking down the aisle. This is a subtle way to add the blue element into your wedding attire.

Another way to add the “Something blue” into your wedding is to wear blue jewelry or tie your bouquet with blue ribbon.

Remember that crazy group of friends from high school that you kept in touch with? What about your old college roommates? Wouldn't you love to have pictures of them from your wedding day? With your wedding festivities keeping you naturally busy, getting those pictures yourself or asking your photographer to get them without compromising their ability to get all the fabulous pictures you want of you and your new husband is a next to impossible feat! Here are a few ideas to help you get pictures of all your guests and keep you present in the festivities.

1) Digital card-reading station. Having a digital photo card-reading station is a great way to grab your guest's candid pictures from the wedding weekend. All you have to do is instruct guests to take their photo cards to the station at the end of the night. The photos will then be uploaded to the station with a few clicks of a button and you and your spouse can then print off copies of the pictures. Pictures that you may not have known were taken. This idea is fun and guaranteed to produce some, well... interesting and memorable pictures for you and your spouse to remember that special day.

2) Photobooth. Remember going to the mall and sitting in those little photobooths with your friends? Remember cramming into that small space and taking silly pictures that still make you laugh today? Me too. That's why this idea is so fun. Your friends can take silly pictures for both you and them to remember. Most photobooths print 2 copies of all pictures. You could keep one of the strips for your scrapbook or wedding album, and the guests could keep the other for their memories. This idea is both fun and unique. Imagine what kinds of crazy faces you will see. Oh man... I'm laughing just thinking about it. So grab your volleyball teammates and take silly pictures that you can all laugh at for years to come. 3) Custom Made Guest Photo Area. It's your day, get creative! What sparks your story as a couple? Are you hikers & bikers, do you spend lots of time on the water, or do you have a favorite movie as a couple? Take that inspiration and create a custom photo wall or backdrop for your guests to take pictures in front of that tie into the personality of your relationship. One of the most unique ones I came across had guests put there heads in faux picture frames that were cut out and attached to a wall full of the couple's family pictures! This is great for childhood friends, work buddies, and even you & your better half!
So don't fret about getting pictures of your college roommates or his lacrosse team. These ideas are great ways to get those groups together to make unforgettable memories. ...and take a few pictures too.

Tuesday Shoesday :: The Inaugural Edition

I'm not a shoe person. I love shoes, don't get me wrong. I like shoes that are cute and comfy or shoes that are pretty enough it doesn't matter that they're not comfy! But, I've never been one to drool over shoes as I passed them in department shoes or spend hours and hours searching for the perfect pair online. And, truthfully, I've never had a picture in my head of the pair I want to walk down the aisle in. But, when I started reading interior design blogs a few years ago, it quickly turned into wedding blogs, too. And, that's when it happened. I fell in love with shoes.

So, for my inaugural Tuesday Shoesday post, I'd like to recognize the pair that I remember first leading me to hunt them down and making me realize I needed to find something fabulous for my own wedding day. Of course, this was several years ago. And, I still haven't found the right pair for our August nuptuals. I'm still looking...

Meet Jojous. She's from Nine West. Lots of ladies have worn her down the aisle. That's a pretty good résumé, don't you think?

So, Jenn. Can we call you “Jenn?”

Yes, Jenn is fine. But, not “Jenny,” please not Jenny . It just isn’t me, but there needs to be something to break up the monotony in the sea of Jennifer’s, doesn’t there? Top 5 names for girls from 1968-1988? 20 years is long enough to rule the roost…

What brings you to the Lauren Kelly Events team?

I believe weddings are important events that should be focused on the couple making vows to one another who have friends and family that will help them keep their vows, whether those people are present at the ceremony or not. But, I also believe that a wedding should be fun for everyone involved, since it’s one of very few times most people have all their loved ones around them at once. So, show ‘em what your lives are like and make it fun! Having a wedding planner or coordinator can go a long way to help an event like that happen and I want to be that wedding planner!

What lights your fire?

White t-shirts, of course. But seriously, I love a good blank slate to get my creative juices flowing. And, a white shirt is that blank slate for me more often than it probably ought to be. White plates on my table do the same thing, they let the beautiful food be what you notice. But, besides good food and a cool white t-shirt, I LOVE to travel. Everything from weekend road-trips to trans-continental treks with multiple forms of transportation are on my wish-list and it’s where my fiancé like to put our energy and free-time. And, we love to travel with family and friends as much as we like to travel alone, though it’s a completely different experience.

Did your love for adventure come from living so many places?

Well I like to say that I am part gypsy. My Grandma Audrey has just as many ants in her pants as I do and needs very little excuse to hop in the car. We’re two of a kind. But, I have lived in 9 cities, 4 states, 3 countries, and in 10 homes. Once you know you can make a home in so many places you start to wonder why not go somewhere instead of asking yourself why. But, Grant is a roots man and I’m all about the wings, so we’re a great blend in that way. And, traveling has taught me other very helpful things, too. For example, haggis isn’t that bad when you’re eating it with ‘neeps and tatties and a really good gravy. Who’d have known?

Do you have a motto? or some words you live by, perhaps?

I’m a “words person” and when people know how to string the right words together in the right order, I melt in my shoes. When I’m trying to design a home for myself or someone else, I always think about William Morris’s thoughts about having nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

I’ve spent most of the last 7 years studying Religion and anyone who is immersed in that world is bound to come across some real beauty. But, faith affects people so differently, so I try to remind myself of Olivier Clement’s words, “Spiritual work has no value if it does not help to deepen humility as the capacity for love. Spiritual progress has no other test in the end, not any better expression than our ability to love.” This is a great reminder for couples starting out, many of whom may not consider themselves “religious” or spiritual,” but get into their marriage and find they need something more than themselves to keep their relationship strong and growing. It’s especially key if one partner is exploring that more than the other and finds them self trying to communicate what they’re experiencing to their partner.

What song could be your soundtrack?

“Clumsy” by Fergie. At least the part about “trippin’, stumblin’, flippin’, fumblin.’” I am not coordinated and neither are my limbs. It’s really too bad, I bruise like the Georgia peach I am!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m from a small town in East Texas. I have a loving family who is always supportive and compassionate. I am always interested in trying new things. I hope to be successful in my life by helping and loving others frequently and laughing often.

What is your favorite color?

I actually have two favorite colors: bright yellow and dark purple. Both fit my personality, I’m really animated and adventurous.

Who inspires you?

My mom is the person who inspires me the most. She is the most supportive person I know, and she has a wonderfully kind spirit. Such a great woman to grow up watching!

What gets you excited?

I am fueled by my love for my family, faith and my enthusiasm for getting to know people. You will hear me talk a lot about my family because they truly are the people who mean to most to me. My faith is at the center of everything I do and my relationships with others are because of my God-given passion. I love meeting and learning more about people.

Spill the beans, What are some quirks? Embarrassing moments?

I tend to be very clumsy at times, but I’m used to tripping and falling, so I don’t get embarrassed easily because I’ve learned to laugh at myself.

What are you most excited about this summer?

This is definitely a dream job for me, so I am ready to learn as much as I can about the wedding industry and get to know the lovely girls I will be working with. Weddings are one of the most important days in many people’s lives. I want to help people’s weddings showcase their personalities and the things that are most important to them. This is one of the ways I feel called to care for others.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to be around people, so hanging out with my friends and family is usually what I do in my time off. I also love to read and music is a big part of my life. My favorite author right now is Donald Miller, and as far as music goes I’m really interested in music like Joshua Radin and Regina Spektor. I am a huge animal lover, I have 5 dogs and 3 cats at home. I also love milk; it’s my favorite drink and I have at least 3 glasses a day.

Alyssa Atteberry

What’s your background?

I just graduated from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. I majored in Accounting & Management, which I realize are not directly related to event planning. But, I was involved in an organization on campus where I learned about all aspects of event planning and absolutely fell in love! Weddings are such special days and I love being a part of the process of making the day special.

Are you a TV watcher?

When One Tree Hill is on I am watching, which is not to be confused with The O.C. And, my loyalty is directly related to Chad Michael Murray and James Laferty, of course.

When Chad and James are busy, what do you entertain yourself with?

I absolutely love scrapbooking, though it usually takes me about an hour to put together a page. I have to design the page down to the last element before attaching and writing. I love that it allows me to portray what I felt and experienced in the moments captured by the photographs. Of course I have my own memories, but the books help me record the details that might get fuzzy over time.

I also love to read and love getting recommendations from friends and strangers alike. Most recently, it’s been Redeeming Love and Captivating on my bedside table. I also love to read Nicholas Sparks books. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a great love story!

How do you balance all that gushy stuff?

I’m a true daddy’s girl at heart, I learned all about football and have been watching it with my dad since I was little. He took me to my first game when I was in Kindergarten and I loved the excitement and adrenaline that took over at every game on the field and in the stands! Hook ‘em horns!

Shooting hoops is what I do to relax and clear my head. Having to slow down, breathe and concentrate is great when my mind is running.

So what movie is it we always hear you quoting?

Um, that would be John Tucker Must Die. “I wish it could just be simple, like a retro pop song, “I want you to want me.” Boom. End of story. We all live happily ever after. But it is never really like that, is it?” So many great lines like that that just cut to the chase!

Best funny memory?

I’m a clumsy girl, I’ll admit it. My favorite “clumsy” moment would have to be the time I fell at the movie theater. You see, the Beltonian had 2 sections: a top section and a bottom section. My friends and I were sitting on the first row of the top section watching “Marley & Me” one day. The theater was full of UMHB students. I had to go to the restroom during the movie, so I got up and tried to step down (thinking it was a small step) to get to the bottom section. Well the step was a lot bigger than I thought, so I tripped and fell. The whole top section saw and laughed. I couldn’t help but laugh at myself too. Did I mention it was during one of the saddest parts of the movie? Yes, the whole bottom half was almost in tears, while the top half was laughing at my mishap. It was quite humorous and a moment that will not soon be forgotten.

What lights your fire?

Music seems to be a way into my soul. There always seems to be a song with the right lyrics that reflects my mood for the moment.

My desire for success drives me. I want to be successful & make my family proud. My parents have high expectations for me, and I want to exceed them.

Planning an event and seeing it come to fruition is why I love event planning. The happiness seen by those experiencing the event is an unexplainable feeling that I truly enjoy.

Music speaks volumes (no pun intended). Finding those songs that make your wedding day an unforgettable one can be difficult. You want a song that evokes the feelings you want your guests to feel at that particular moment in time. You want to choose songs that convey your love for your spouse, your bond with your father, and your excitement about the wedding. Which songs are ideal for your magical day? Here are some tips for the wedding style of your choice:

TRADITONAL WEDDING:
Pre-ceremony: "The Wedding Song (There is Love)" by Noel Paul Stookey
This song is great because it perfectly describes the purpose for your guests being there: the wedding.
Bridal Party Entrance: "Autumn" by Vivaldi
This classic song sets the ideal tone for the ceremony.
Bridal March: "Here Comes the Bride (Bridal Chorus)" by Wagner
Dum, dum, da, dum... Here Comes the Bride... We have all heard this song at weddings. It is great for turning all attention to the bride during her stride to her husband-to-be. *sigh*
Recessional: "Wedding March" by Mendelssohn
This song has the beat that portrays the feeling "I'm happy, I'm married, and now I'm ready to party." Another classic for a traditional wedding.
First Dance: "At Last" by Etta James
This song is beautiful. The lyrics portray a beautiful idea of "I have found that one person I am meant to spend the rest of my life with." Brings tears to my eyes every time.
Daddy/Daughter Dance: "My Girl" by the Temptations
This is a lovely song that portrays a father's love for his daughter. Like my dad always says, I will always be "his little girl." This song really portrays that feeling of a father's love for his "little girl."
Mother/Son Dance: "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
What better song is there for a mom and son to share a sweet dance? For most moms, it is hard to let their sons be taken care of by another woman. "What a Wonderful World" is a beautiful song that conveys this idea that the groom (son) has created a wonderful world for his mom & she is thankful.
Last Dance: "Last Dance" by Donna Summer

CONTEMPORARY/MODERN WEDDING:
Pre-ceremony: "Clocks" by Coldplay
Coldplay is a great band that has music tolerable for all ages. "Clocks" is a song that both grandma and your teenage niece can appreciate. It is great for getting guests excited about the wedding.
Bridal Party Entrance: "I'll Be There For You" by the Rembrandts
Yes. We all know and love this theme song from the TV series "Friends" right? It is a fun, light-hearted song that shows that your friends (and incidentally your bridal party) will always be there for you. It is fun and upbeat and a great way to start off the ceremony.
Bridal March: "The Prayer" by Josh Groban and Charlotte Church
Confession: I have this song on my iTunes. My best friend used this song for her wedding and it is so beautiful. The combination of English & Italian is lovely and unique. It is a beautiful song with great wedding lyrics. Of course, I'm a little biased...
Recessional: "Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden
Again, I must sigh. This song is so beautiful. It reveals a deep love that is untouchable. What a great song to show that your love for each other is true, deep, and unwavering. It is a great end to a beautiful ceremony.
First Dance: "I Do (Cherish You)" by 98 degrees
Ok, so boy bands of the 90's are usually not used for weddings. But this song by 98 degrees is a beautiful song that portrays love in a way that is unmatched by all other boy bands. Nick Lachey really knew what he was singing about.
Daddy/Daughter Dance: "Daughters" by John Mayer
John Mayer does a wonderful job of portraying the father's role in his daughter's life. Every father wants to be the "hero" to his daughter, and John Mayer describes this role in a brilliant way.
Mother/Son Dance: "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban
Another great Groban song that is excellent at portraying what is intended. "You Raise Me Up" is an incredible song that shows how thankful the groom is for his mom always being there to encourage him.
Last Dance: "Save the Last Dance for Me" by Michael Buble
Oh Michael Buble... what a beautiful voice to end the night. This song, like "Last Dance" lets your guests know that the party is over, but they can still have that one last, unforgettable dance with that special someone.

RUSTIC WEDDING:
Pre-ceremony: "Then" by Brad Paisley
This is a wonderfully romantic song that is great for preparing the guests for the special ceremony to follow. When Brad sings "Then," one can hear that his love only continues to grow for his wife, as will the love between the bride and groom.
Bridal Party Entrance: "Bless the Broken Road" by the Rascal Flatts
This song beautifully describes the journey and heartache one faces to find their one true love. What better way to start the ceremony than with a beautiful song saying "God bless the broken road that led me straight to you."
Bridal March: "I Swear" by John Michael Montgomery
This song is so wonderful. Making a promise to love someone for the rest of your life is a wonderful moment in every person's life. This song does a fantastic job of portraying the love it takes to see you through to that promise of forever.
Recessional: "Forever and Ever Amen" by Randy Travis
"Oh I'm gonna love you forever and ever, forever and ever, forever and ever amen." Need I say more? This is a great song to wrap up the actual ceremony portion of the wedding.
First Dance: "Amazed" by Lonestar
Absolutely beautiful song with absolutely beautiful lyrics. "Amazed" like "I Do (Cherish You)" expresses a love that is unconditional and everlasting.
Daddy/Daughter Dance: "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw
Ok, so who doesn't love a little Tim McGraw? This song truly conveys how every father is feeling when that wedding day comes. They do not want to let their daughters go, but they know she will be happy.
Mother/Son Dance: "I Hope You Dance" by LeAnn Womack
This song just makes my heart happy. It is a beautiful song and it wonderfully shows a mother's love and how she hopes that her son may "dance" even in life's difficult times.
Last Dance: "When I Said I Do" by Clint Black & Lisa Hartman Black
"When I Said I Do" is a wonderful way to end the celebration because it ties in the new beginning for the bride and groom. The day was all about saying those two wonderful words, "I do." Why not remind guests of the amazing ceremony and the reason for the celebration?

INDIE WEDDING:
Pre-ceremony: "Lucky Man" by The Verve
"Lucky Man" is wonderful for the simple reason that the guy (your husband-to-be) is describing how he is a lucky man for finding you. How romantic is that?
Bridal Party Entrance: "Lullaby" by the Spill Canvas
This song is beautiful. The part that really gets me and tugs at my heartstrings is that the guy is saying that he loves his lady and all of her imperfections (although he doesn't think they are imperfections at all). Every girl wants to hear her guy say that.
Bridal March: "This Must Be The Place" by the Talking Heads
This song is fun because it is like you, as the bride, are saying you are home when you are with your man. You are comfortable and your love for him will never change.
Recessional: "Love and Some Verses" by Iron & Wine
"I'll only love you" is my favorite lyric in this song. It is a perfect verse to hear right after the magical "I do's" exchanged between you and your new husband.
First Dance: "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes
One of the best parts about this song is that it tells a story. It talks about falling in love at first sight, and making it to that glorious wedding day.
Daddy/Daughter Dance: "Gracie" by Ben Folds
"Gracie" is such a sweet song and clearly shows a father's love for his daughter. Once again, it is like a dad saying his daughter will always be his "little girl."
Mother/Son Dance: "Only You" by Joshua Radin
This song is great. The groom, by choosing this song, is telling is mother that he doesn't know where he would be without his mother's love and encouragement throughout his life. So sweet.
Last Dance: "You Are The Best Thing" by Ray LaMontagne
I like this song because it basically says that at the end of the day, you are still the best thing about your new husband's day. Say it with me now, "aww..."

First off, you should know that I am terrified to post this. Wonder why my blog has been so quiet lately? It is not because I have nothing to say - It is because I have all too much to say and I am scared. But a kind friend reminded me to take the leap that I was destined to and open another window into my life for all of you.

This Sunday (Valentine's Day) my new blogsite and heart centered business, Love, Milk & Honey, will go live. The journey of emotions that is washing over me as I make a dream come true is absolutely overwhelming in all the right ways. I am finally taking ownership of what my purpose, passion, and love is and sharing it with all of you. (didn't even make it through a paragraph without tears...sheesh)

After 4 years in the wedding Industry, I have realized why it is that I have not felt completely fulfilled with my job. While I am helping couples plan their big day, I can't help but wonder if they are planning for what comes after that day: a marriage. I cannot, with a clear conscious, send you down the aisle without wanting you to flourish in your marriage. While whom you love may not be seen as a choice (since feelings are funny that way) I am a firm believer that marriage is. A choice you make daily. To hold true to your vows and love your spouse to the best of your abilities. Always. But what happens when you hit snags in your communication? Or how on earth do you make his la-z-boy fit into your shabby chic decor ideas? What about getting or staying fit, grocery shopping for two, and managing a budget? you must be kidding, right? At Love, Milk and Honey we will focus on all of those subjects. Plus so many others that weigh on us, lift us up, inspire us and challenge us. We will chat about them, work through them, and surround each other in a community like setting to lift each other up through each step. You can make a choice to love each other for life but if you do not take steps to equip yourself to handle the struggles of life, you aren't setting yourself up to experience the fullest and most holistic marriage possible.

I will not be the only voice you will hear on the blogsite. My amazingawesomerockinghandsomehunkysuperdeduper husband, James, will be a vital part of it all on a regular basis. We will also have some wonderful contributors that have the same heart for each of you and insurmountable knowledge in their areas of expertise that have graciously agreed to share at Love, Milk & Honey.

What a Difference

I am continually exhilarated by possibilities. Life, and everything about it, just gives me goosebumps. The fact that we are given the opportunity to make a difference each day we are gifted on this Earth captures me.

pur⋅pose:: the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc.

When I attended the Making Things Happen Intensive in Watercolor, FL this past December I was asked to write down my life purpose. I was told to make it a phrase that encouraged action and be prepared to share it with the group. As I sat in a room full of inspirational professionals, I knew none of the words I would hear out of their mouths would encompass stagnant behavior. That simply would not be tolerated.

So I thought.

What excited me? What made my heart race and my mind flow? What made me smile my biggest smile and cry my hardest tears?

Encouragement:: from others, to others, for others. to lift up, to praise, to be joyful for...others.

To Encourage.

That is my purpose. And knowing it has made ALL the difference.

A whole world of opportunity was presented to me that day in Florida. One that I knew existed but didn't know my place in. One that I now get to experience on a daily basis. A world that has stretched me, challenged me and provided me with endless opportunities to live out my purpose with and for people I love. Some of whom I have never met in person.

It's amazing what a difference it makes to put down the worries, fears and the insecurities we hide behind. stop. and listen.

to your heart.

to your head.

to your soul.

A Week in Review

I guarantee I am one of the happiest people on Earth to see this week come to a close. I have, without a doubt, had the hardest week of my life. This week has brought me more tears, frustration, vulnerability, humbleness, agony, fear and failure than I have ever experienced.

Without going into too many of the gory details, here is my perspective.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

If I were trying to conquer all of this on my own, I wouldn't stand a chance. My strength, my hope, my endurance, my peace comes from Him. And the fact that he deemed me strong enough (with his help) to conquer all the bad things that came my way this week is a huge compliment. Wait... did I just say compliment? Yes. I did. A compliment. If I were weak, if I were destined to be mundane and unoriginal, I would not be worth wasting a perfectly bad week on. While I know that I have brought this all on myself, God has proven his ever present faithfulness to me throughout it all. And that, is a compliment.

Does that make it easy? No. Does that make me not be anxious and throw up every hour? No. But it does make me realize This too shall pass. I am taking part in a series of obstacles that will grow me, tune me, refine me and better me. And that is enough to make me believe that the sun will shine a little brighter tomorrow.

My good friend, Emily Ley gave me a scripture to feast on this week that I want to share with you. It says:

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

I encourage you as we bring this week to a close to find your strength and celebrate in it. We can conquer mountains when we put our minds to it and team up with the right mates.

Who I Am

I am spunky. :: I laugh a lot. :: I love my red hair. :: I have an amazing husband. :: I am driven by passion. :: I have a temper. :: I stand firm in my beliefs. :: I speak my mind. :: I am Southern. :: I am an encourager. :: I love modern design. :: I recharge best when I'm alone. :: I crave change often. :: I love hard. :: I dream BIG.

In my few weeks following the Making Things Happen Intensive, I have made more scary decisions, taken more leaps of faith and trusted more people with my vulnerability than I have in my entire life. And (after the initial anxiety attack, sweating and vomit) it has felt wonderful.

Sometimes it is okay for things to be about you. Not in a selfish way - but in a way of constant self evaluation and growth. I would encourage you to take time every month to evaluate how you dealt with the obstacles that came your way in the past 30 days. Did you take every opportunity to love life? Did you invest in others? Did you operate your day-to-day under the premise of honesty and integrity? If not, tomorrow is a new day and it can all change. The best way to grow is to learn. From yourself, from those you aspire to be like, from literature, etc.

I mentioned earlier that I crave change. That is true, I have never lived in a town longer than 5 years. Ever. It makes me crazy and I start to feel as though my wings are clipped. I have passed that 5 year mark this past August. And it made me realize why I crave change.

The people that have known me for the better part of the 5+ years I have lived here would tell you I have grown as a person, I have chased my dreams, I have pressed my luck and I am pretty cool. I like that. I like that people would say that about me. So, to me, now seems like the perfect time to make my exit. The challenge that I am facing now is that we are staying. That I have to become REAL and VULNERABLE with these people. They love me & deserve to see the bad with the good.

This has caused me to do an immeasurable amount of self- reflection as of late. People, that is scary. I am a realist by nature but I have gotten really good at looking past things so I don't have to analyze or deal with them.

I have noticed, even though I have had some of my hardest days in the last couple weeks, I have been happier, more satisfied with my imperfections, laughed more, smiled more, been able to give more of myself to others, and just really felt at peace a ton more often than I have felt stressed. The characteristics that I listed at the top of this post are the things that I have found out about myself and embraced. As crazy as it sounds, getting to know myself has been such a liberating experience.

Honesty is freedom. I encourage you to take the leap and dig deep into you. If you really let go and be vulnerable about everything, you will benefit dramatically.

2010 is here!

Even though I woke up raring to meet 2010 with a fire this morning, I was hit by a brick wall named allergies. It has zapped me for most of the day but I am finally starting to feel balanced again (thanks to some wonderful in-laws and a few naps).

I had planned to do a video blog for you today asking for some feedback but I have decided to postpone that until tomorrow due to a red nose that gives rudolph a run for his money, hair that will not be tamed, and allergy medicine that has turned me narcoleptic.

So until we meet tomorrow, I wish each of you a VERY Happy New Year fill with lots of love, family, friends, laughter, and joy!

Hello Friends,
Just wanted to fill you in on the first of many changes. My new Twitter username is theLaurenKelly. If you are already following me, you will still be following me, you will just see my tweets under a new name. If you aren't following me -- hop to it. (I have a neat little sidebar to the right that makes it super simple or click on the link above)
To clear up any confusion: I do not feel as though I need a "the" in front of my name because I am special. I just plan to offer much more than events to you in 2010 and wanted you to be able to associate my name with everything I do. Plus, some inactive squatter has my name on twitter and until they get up off it we are stuck with the "the."

Today my mind is spinning and reeling with a fantastic view of what reality can become. I am still fired up from the Making Things Happen Intensive that I was blessed to attend a week ago today. Below is what I wrote on my plane ride home:

What an experience. I am sitting on the plane ride back from Making Things Happen 2010 and am blown away to say the very least.

The capability of the incredible wedding professionals at the conference absolutely rocked my world. It was life changing. There is something so meaningful about transparency. The good, the bad, and the ugly are able to come out -- you are honest about it all -- and grow just from the challenge of embracing what you put out there. It is inspiring, truly.

I am walking away with an unbelievable grasp on where my place is in the wedding world now and where it can be six months from now and even where it will be a year from now. And guys, I am excited.

I am driven, I am absolutely fired up (although not quite as fired up as Jeff Holt, who actually caught on fire), and I am beyond ready to Make Things Happen.

This feeling still overwhelms me today. I twittered earlier: "I'm embracing that big things WILL happen. No if's allowed today. It's high time to show negativity and doubt the door." This statement sums it all up -- this is how I am approaching 2010. I choose. I choose that things will come to fruition. I choose what things to give emphasis to in my life and in my business. I choose to not let others get the best of me. And I choose to be more than great.

Question 2

Today, we are going to hit another question so grab your coffee and let's get to it.

Growing up, my parents always told me: You are who you hang around with. I took that with a grain of salt. It wasn't until college that I realized how true that statement was. I had many different living situations throughout my college experience and looking back now, I can tell you exactly how each roommate affected my moods, my behavior, my drive and my overall outlook on life.   So this next question hit home with me:

Who are the people you spend your days with and how do they make you feel?

I suggest you do this privately as I have done. But please actually do it and use it as a tool. It helped me see who I come in contact with on a regular basis that makes me act like a version of myself that I do not want to be. It also helped me to see those that I have been able to rely on time and time again. But what really shocked me is how much it showed me that I don't fully let many people into my life.

I am a compartmentalizer, always have been, but I never realized that I compartmentalized my friendships - I have a group of friends that I talk to about work, a group of friends that I talk to about marriage, one I talk to only on a surface level and a shocking two that I actually talk to about it all - (one of those being my husband). No wonder I feel zapped so often -- it's not because I let others feed off of my energy it is because I am selfish with it, don't share it, and let it overwhelm me.

It is time I sought counsel. I wouldn't dare make a big business move or chop my hair off without speaking to people I trust to tell me the truth - so why do I go through the daily things without it?

We need counsel, we need people to go through the journey with us -- the good and the bad.

Hmm.. something to think about on a Friday.

Question 1

First part of "feeling your fear" is recognizing it, calling it out for what it is. And that is exactly what I challenge myself (and you) to do today.

The formula is simple: I am afraid of _______ because _______. And I plan to do __________ to overcome it.

Here are a few of mine:

I am afraid my ideas will be ridiculed and I will be laughed at because I am young. I plan to approach my colleagues with confidence, present my ideas proudly, and make sure I have thought through all the facets so I am as prepared as possible for questions and challenges. My age has nothing to do with how creative my ideas are.

I am afraid I will be limited in the small town that I live in because people's expectations of service and price point have been determined by hobbyist planners up until this point. I need to realize that the only thing that can "limit" me is myself. I can expand my territory beyond the current confines and it is up to me to re-educate the people in the area.

I am afraid that my lack of money management skills is going to get the best of me, I plan to get over my fear of talking about money and enlist the help of someone trustworthy and knowledgeable, realizing I cannot do it all on my own -- it is okay to admit that I am not as strong in a certain area.

I am afraid that my competitive nature will make me more interested in outdoing others rather than offering comradery. I plan to take the first steps in building relationships with others in my area that enjoy the same career as I do, and know that the responsibility is solely my own to keep this relationship positive and consistent.

and the biggie....

I am afraid that my friendship with my clients and creativity will be taken advantage of again, as it was this year. I will take complete fault for not standing up for myself sooner, being a businesswoman before I was a friend, and communicating, explicitly, my role. I plan to be more upfront with each client about my job and their expectations and always hold to my contract. I charge what I am worth.

No better time than the present, ladies. Don't be crippled by your fear. Dig it out. Work through it. And come out a better person.

Christmas Time! :: Obsessions, Thoughts & Giggles

Obsessions: I am beyond mildly obsessed with the Pampered Chef "Festive Holiday Desserts" Cookbook we got as a wedding present. I mean how can you go wrong with recipes that tell you how to make things such as:

Creamy Eggnog Parfaits

Frosty Snowman Cake

Marshmallow Treat Ornaments, and

Mint Chocolate Ice Cream Cake.

It also gives you tips and tricks along the way so that your dessert looks exactly like the ones in the pictures. I definitely suggest it for those of you that have a sweet tooth and like to do some holiday cooking! Thoughts: We get to spend the Christmas holidays with my side of the family this year. As a newlywed, I wasn't sure how working out the holidays would be but it has shaped up to be fairly easy to make the decision and have both sides of the family be on board with it. I love Christmas with my family! All the ladies spend the days leading up to Christmas in the kitchen cooking some amazing homemade goodies that we have had in the family for years (fudge, divinity, sitting on a ritz, tortilla rolls, etc.). Christmas day is spent around the fire opening presents, just enjoying each others company, and scarfing down a huge Christmas lunch. The guys usually find a football game to watch (read: turn on and fall asleep to in the lay-z-boys) and us girls make our way back to my grandmother's sewing room to take a look at all the goodies she has been working on or head out to hit the after Christmas sales!

Giggles: One Christmas a few years ago my baby sister ( I guess I shouldn't call her a baby anymore, she is turning 15, 5 days after Christmas) wanted to try out a recipe that required us to make chocolate bowls. We had a genius idea that we would just blow up some balloons and dip them in the melted chocolate, set them on wax paper, and let them cool and voila! bowls. Things were going very well, the balloons were working perfectly until all of a sudden, POP! and then another POP! and before we knew it, the entire kitchen was covered in chocolate, popped balloons, and mountains of laughter. We still find chocolate in granny's kitchen every time we are there!

A side note: As some of you may know, I am seriously allergic to cinnamon -- mostly the scent and fake flavoring (think candles and red hots) -- but it will get me in almost any form it comes in so walking into stores at Christmas time is always a gamble. I tend to end the season with a half empty bottle of Benadryl and some "plumped" lips. So if you happen to see me out and about and I look a bit fuller-than-normal in the lip department just give me a hug anyway.

"Feeling the Fear"

The savvy soul who is putting on the Making Things Happen Intensive I am attending next week wrote a post a few weeks ago that really sparked something inside of me.

You see, I have been sitting on an absolutely crazy and intricate yet passionate idea for almost a year now. I have no doubt that it could be the exact thing that many people need as they go through the process of planning an event that leads to a major change in their lives. Weddings, Babies, Company openings, etc. Problem is, I AM TERRIFIED. There, I said it. Whew. I'm scared, people. It takes some guts to put something out there that you have been dreaming up for so long. I have no clue if anyone else will think it is a good idea. It fits nicely in the box that I have hid it in for so long. It could fail miserably. But regardless, I feel that I should follow some instructions that have been given lately:

Words Cannot Express..

How excited and honored I am to have been chosen as a Making Things Happen™Scholarship Recipient.

I will be attending this intensive in Watercolor, Florida on December 21st. There, I will have an opportunity to really analyze my business and work through a plan of action for 2010 with the guidance of Lara Casey, editor in chief of Southern Weddings Magazine and owner of Lara Casey Reps, and in the presence of other Wedding Industry colleagues. I must say, when I heard Lara say my name on her announcement video, (don't worry... I have watched it 8 times and even made my husband watch it to make sure she really said my name) I was immediately engulfed in a world of emotions: I am so excited it is truly beyond words. I am incredibly nervous because I know I will be asked some hard questions. I am honored that Lara read my entry and thought enough of me to encourage me (through this scholarship) to be a part of her intensive. What on earth am I going to wear? But more than anything, I am bursting with anticipation for the opportunity to share my experience with each of you.

To be completely honest, my ambition and drive has been running a little low lately. The ideas and creativity are there but it feels like, at this point, they are trying to get to their destination with a couple of flat tires and an empty gas tank. I will be taking the time at this intensive to re-fuel and get things back in working order so that I can be of the best service to each of my clients and have a successful 2010.

{fashionably friday} tis the season

I am officially ready for the holidays! As I perused through my usual inspiration places as well as I few new ones I came across some wonderful color stories to share with you as you prepare your home for the holidays!

Our first one is mostly silver with some hints of blues, reds, and muted pinks.

If your home is full of richer, deeper colors, gold would be the better metallic option for you.

But the kid in me is still in love with the traditional color palate of red & green and can't help but love winter berries.

Real Wedding: Melissa & John

Meet Melissa & John

Both grads of my dear ole' Baylor University, These two tied the knot on August 1st in Ft. Worth Texas.

The guys were a blast to work with seeing as how I attended school with about 80% of them. And a couple of them were repeat offenders in the groomsmen category in weddings that I have coordinated so that made it even more fun. They definitely brought the party.

But the girls were definitely not there to be outdone. Add a little sass to a purple dress and you've got it made.

Melissa and her delightful mother really had an incredible eye for details. You could see it throughout the entire occasion. From the legacy table to the display of the wedding dresses worn by Melissa's grandmothers and mother, it would be a lie to say that refined taste didn't run in the family.

Remember what I said about bringing the party? The band, Pardi Gras, out of Ft. Worth really got the crowd going! I don't think there was ever a lull in the dancing.

And their incredible photographer, Rebecca Cash, never missed a beat.

Congratulations, Melissa & John! Wishing you a lifetime of happiness!

Planning a wedding is an emotional undertaking. One that involves many people, lots of time, intense feelings and uncharted waters. In my personal experience, I have found that during the event planning process, people migrate to one of these patterns when it comes to dealing with opinions - both their own and their peers.

1. Those who want everyone's opinion (including the strangers in the dress shop) and tend to still be indecisive no matter how much input they have received.

2. Those who cherish the opinion of those close to them and mingle those suggestions with their own, letting the other outsider's interjections be taken with a grain of salt.

3. Those who know what they want and how they want it.

4. Those who have no opinion and would rather someone else make the decisions for them.

5. Those who may have an opinion but because of an outspoken family member, friend or significant other, they succumb to the preferences of others - knowing it is not what they really want.

My position on event planning is this: Your event is an expression of your life and the special person you have found to share it with. Your life does involve your friends and family but it by no means is consumed or determined by them. Nor should your event be. Keep your opinions, share ideas with a select few people that will be honest but supportive and if there is one (or a few) people that tend to put in more than their fair share, keep in mind that your job is not to please them.

I realize a lot of parents pay for the event. And for that, I promise, your children are grateful. This does not, however, give you the right to make all the decisions, make your child feel guilty or moronic because of their choices, or go behind their back to change things. It does give you the invitation to be a part of an exciting process for an important event in your child's life. Share your opinions tastefully and support their endeavors. Add your seasoned wisdom to their ideas but make sure their love story is really being told in a way that the guests can't help but see the couple's personality in.

If you have hired a professional coordinator (I strongly suggest you do) he or she will be able to present springboards for your thoughts and creative ways to express your ideas through your event. Use them -- and let your coordinator help you to fuse your ideas into a cohesive event. Don't turn your consultations into a counseling session. Keep perspective amidst the emotions and take a breath before you let anything (or anyone) get the best of you. Think before you speak and remember that this is your daughter/mother/son/friend that is going through a very important time in their life- and if you intend to keep that relationship healthy after the event, you must act accordingly now.

Jewel Tones

I have found my design tendencies leaning towards the jewel tones as of late. You obviously all know that I am indeed in love with anything plum colored -- and some of the most wonderful color pairings to go with plum include burgundy, rusty orange, marine blue, mustard yellow, and emerald green. These colors are richly saturated and would add great amounts of warmth to dinner parties, wedding receptions, or your holiday tablescape!

Long gone are the days of taffeta monstrosities, with such talented designers out there focusing their attention on ready-to- wear gowns, we have many options that allow our bridesmaids to stride in style!

Think outside the box for bridemaid's dresses - look in unexpected places - and don't think just because you want something that gives the feel of couture it means that you have to spend what you would for couture.

Pumpkins with Spice

Don't be fooled into thinking pumpkins can only be orange. The beauty of mother nature is that her color palate is limitless. My favorite fall accessory of the moment is pumpkins - much like the ones above that are a wonderful DIY project from the fabulous Eddie Ross.

I think the beauty of a tablescape comes in creating something unexpected from something ordinary. And the fall season gives us all the tools necessary to do just that.

You can even pair seasonal elements with an unexpected color to keep that lighthearted feel to your home. Remember, we are working with mother nature's color palate here.

Real Wedding: Stacy & Adam

Meet Stacy & Adam

and Coco too!

Although Stacy is originally from Waco, she met Adam up in the New England state of Rhode Island. Adam spotted her on her first day at her new job and was determined to make this Texas girl his! The wedding included nods to Stacy's Texas upbringing (notice the beautiful star Adam had designed into her ring) as well as to their new home in New England (hello lanterns & beautiful blue).

They were married in May at the gorgeous Earle Harrison House here in Waco.

Their colors were Royal Blue, platinum, and white. The talented Esther Allen made their cakes.

And Rebecca Cash, owner of Captivating Photography, did a fantastic job on their photography.

What Gets Me.

Growing up as a mildly ocd child, I rarely stopped to notice the little things that surrounded me. I was driven by the bigger picture, the task that needed to be completed and how to handle the array of emotions that were being experienced by both my self and those that surrounded me.

My mother is completely opposite - on road trips she always made my dad pull over the car so she could take a picture of the beautiful sunset or to see a historic landmark. She smells the roses, she appreciates clouds and the funny faces that God paints in them and she feels deeper than any other person I know.

That gets me. It gets me that I don't get it. That I mentally don't know how to stop for a moment and just appreciate things. My life is full of tasks to complete, places to be, meetings to hold and people to impress. The statement "Live life to it's fullest" is so incredibly hard for me to grasp. My life is full - but not of living.

So I'm taking snapshots. Mental snapshots. It is the only way my memory works. I have to physically take a look around, notice my surroundings, take a deep breath - take in the smells, tell my skin to feel the air, clear my mind of to do lists and just be present in that moment. Then I close my eyes and let it imprint itself in my mind. Then, in that moment, I get it. I get that life, true life, is such a beautiful blessing - fragile, vibrant, captivating and breathtaking.

I have a snapshot of my wedding. I'm standing under the gazebo, Mr. V is holding my hands, I'm looking out in the crowd and am truly humbled by the amount of people that love us enough to be there (in the heat no less), my beautiful little sister is standing next to me (tears rolling down her face), my father is performing the ceremony and my mom is on the front row keeping her role as my biggest fan. It was hot - beyond hot - but it smelled like flowers and the grass was so green and the boy that caught my eye 8 years ago was looking at me in a way that makes me feel like the most treasured girl on the planet. It was a day that meant the world to me. That is life if you let it be. At that moment I wasn't a young professional, I wasn't someone's wedding planner. I was a woman that was pledging to love an incredible man. It got me.

It's time to stop and take a moment. Think about all the times you missed because you were just too busy. If you are like me, you get irritated when a kink is thrown in your plans but today, I urge you to pause. Don't even let your plans take a back seat, show them the door - I promise it is ok. Take a look around and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. This was all made for us, after all. So don't snub it away today - laugh a little longer, hug a little tighter, breathe a little deeper and love with abandon.

Real Wedding: Ross and Tonya

Meet Ross & Tonya

I had the privelege of working with them on their June 2009 wedding! If you know me, you know that I get most of my brides and their weddings a nickname of sorts -- well this was my "hollywood glam" couple! When Tonya and I worked on her inspiration board she told me that she wanted a wedding that Audrey Hepburn would love, and I think we definitely succeded!

The ceremony was held in the beautiful sanctuary of First Baptist Church Waco, TX.

And their photographer, Tim Ivey, of Imago Pix did a phenomenal job of giving them something out of the ordinary for their group shots.

Tonya wore an ivory, solid lace gown along with a birdcage veil she made herself. Ross wore a black tux with an ivory tie.

Tonya and her bridesmaids carried bouquets consisting of hydrangea, pink anemone, pink roses, pale pink peonies and black feathers. And each of her bridesmaids donned a custom made headpiece as well!The flowers were done by the Lauren Kelly Events team!

The reception was held just down the street at the relatively new Phoenix Ballroom. And with this crowd(*cough* aggies *cough*), reception means PARTY! And party, they did!

Garden Gatsby ~ Becoming a Bride

How I was going to look on the big day wasn't ever something I put TONS of thought into. I knew it would come naturally when it was supposed to. I had no doubt the perfect dress would find it's way to me or me to it and sure enough, I was just that lucky.

I had gone a few places to try on gowns such as...

this one:

And this one: (which was definitely a contender)

But, in the end, I chose a beautiful dress from the talented Anne Barge's La Fleur collection. And it was absolutely perfect.

My veil was one of my absolute favorite things about my look. It came from the same bridal boutique where I bought my dress (which I will rave about here shortly). It is make of Russian Netting and was the perfect "glam" flare for my dress!

The Bridal Boutique I visited and bought my dress and veil from really made the process so very enjoyable for me. It was Bridal Portfolio in Southlake, Texas ((817) 912-0912). I was the only bride in the salon while I was trying on dresses and they did a wonderful job of not talking me into anything. They were there to offer expert advice but they let my entourage (mom, granny, aunt grace, and lizzie - my amazing little sister) do the majority of the discussing.

After I was greeted when we walked in the door, they escorted me into the main salon area and walked me around to various wooden cases that held some of the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. I pointed, they pulled and the gorgeous gowns came flowing from the case and put back in the dressing room for me to try. I think I felt every single one they pulled out - I have this thing about fabric...pretty fabric. But it was the second dress in the first case that caught my attention. It was casual enough to be worn outdoors in the hot july heat but it had so many details that I just loved. The ruffle at the top, the pleating and the mermaid style just made it so different than anything else I had tried on but the perfect gown for me to base all of our other special wedding details off of. I tried it on first and after trying on 10 - 15 others, there was no question in anyone's mind that it was the one.

Here is where I got lucky, the dress was the perfect size - it fit like a glove...a very very pretty ivory colored glove. And, you know what? they sold that very dress to me - and since it was a sample, they sold it to me for 20% off. Are you serious?!? NO WAY!! Oh, yes way, I walked out of the door that August day with my dress. And not once did I ever doubt that it was the one for me.

5 days out from the wedding and I just cannot believe it! James and I have had such a journey to get to this point but looking back at it all now, I wouldn't change a single thing. To me, our love story is perfect, meant just for us. And I know it will continue to be just that after we say "I do." I am looking forward to share all of our fun wedding details with you (that I have been keeping under lock and key) after our guests are able to enjoy them and we get back from our wonderful honeymoon. Hi all!

As I am sure you can tell from some of my recent posts, things have been changing. Both in my personal life and in Lauren Kelly Events. Let's catch up...

First of all, I am so excited to share with you that Sarah Hess of Fleeting Moments Studio and I have come together and created a wonderful space for you to enjoy, located at 1505 Austin Avenue (right next door to Sironia, by Salon Evidence)! I have mentioned to most of you that I was looking for a new studio space and I could not be more happy with the situation that has come about. The Studio is still a work in progress but I have a few teaser pics to whet your appetite.

Challenges

Challenges are a funny thing to me... I try to be the good minister's daughter and accept them with joy and let people know that I have a "peace" about hard circumstances. But, here is the truth. I'm mad. Raging mad.

Those of you that know me know that I work EXTREMELY hard. Sometimes forsaking friends, fiances, family and myself just to get the job done on a level of excellence beyond comprehension. It's a perfectionist thing. Some say I am really good at prioritizing. I think I'm terrible at it and here is why: If you are work, you come first. If I see a career move, I take it... whether I have time or not. I go for weeks without calling friends, years without reading books (which I truly love to do) and days without stopping to smell the roses and really appreciate the great things I have in life.

Today was a wake up call. The failing economy hit me today. But more than that, the failures of people that I put a lot of effort into and work really hard for came to light as a world of deceit that has apparently been in the works for 6 months.

How I am choosing to deal. 1. Playing Kelly Clarkson (my favorite hateful girl music) 2. Keeping my hard work for me...remembering that I am also my own marketing director and what have I done for MY company lately. 3. Channeling my anger into what promises to be one helluva conversation this evening. (those of you that know me appreciate the bite in the words I can deliver). Do I intend to be rude or catty or immature: NO. Do I intend to relay in a well spoken and firm manner my disappointment and frustration: YES.

It is all about the choices you make when a challenge arises. Do you cower and let it eat you alive or do you look it square in the eyes and quit literally tell it to bring it's best because yours is better? Today, and everyday, I strive to choose option B.

Wedding Website

After months of researching all the possible sites to get our website out of I chose one. I put all of our information on it, showed it to my family, and changed the template daily. But, I hated it... nothing about it was "us" we just don't fit into templates I guess. :)

So, I went to godaddy.com and purchased our domain name. They then give you a free hosting account (you have to keep their godaddy ad at the top of your site...but it is a small sacrifice to me.) I then got on my trusty Mac and went to town on a creation of our own. And, you know what, I love it. No... I beyond love it.

If you have a free weekend and have some time to create something all your own (with the help of something wonderful like iweb) then I definitely suggest it.

Here's to not fitting a template!

The team at StillMotion is by far one of the most intriguing cinematography talents in the industry. I could (and have) spend hours on their website and blog.

You just don't find things like this around my part of Texas. And unfortunately Mr. V and I don't have the budget to get this bunch of talent down to us but man, oh man!

My favorite thus far are the ones that they did for Mrs. Milkshake from Weddingbee.

A word from the wise.

Mr. V and I both grew up in spiritual homes. Both of our fathers have held ministerial positions and Mr. V himself is following in that pattern as he studies to go into youth ministry. I love that we both have such strong Christian families and I am amazed at the blessings that are new in our relationship because of it, every day.

I am a firm believer that people are placed in your path to encourage you and press you to grow as you take steps through life. Mr. V and I have had the glorious pleasure of having so many people in our lives that have done just that for us. Both individually and as a couple. When we first started talking about our wedding, we were on the same page when it came to incorporating those special people into our special day. Besides the fact that we will have 4 ministers taking part in our ceremony, we will also have 4 different married couples that have served as wonderful sounding boards and mentors that will be sharing special words of wisdom, scripture, or a marriage related challenge during a portion of our ceremony.

It has always bothered me that the ceremony seems to get lost in the shuffle of the reception when, in fact, it is the reason everyone has gathered that day. We are bound and determined that ours will not be dwarfed in comparison and that those we hold so close will be an active part of our ceremony - not just another name on the guest list or a plate of food to pay for. We are who we are and where we are because of their encouragement and (sometimes tough) love.

My excitement about this just won't subside and I think it is perhaps because drafting the letter that we are sending out to these couples (tomorrow) was almost completely written by Mr. V. I love it when he leads and inspires me to follow. I by no means suggest that I am submissive, (those of you who know me definitely know that isn't a characteristic of my personality) I simply adore the fact that I am marrying a man who outstandingly expresses love in some of the most unexpected ways.

Without further adieu, here is the text of the letter:

Dear ____________,

Lauren and I would like to thank you for the strong positive influence you have been in our lives; whether it be as an individual or in a sense of our relationship together. We are so excited to move in the next way we feel God leading us, by joining ourselves together in marriage.

Because of our time spent with you and the strong Christian values we know you withhold we would like you to play a special part in our ceremony. Our goal is to have multiple couples that have been a wonderful example to us to share a small token of advice. It can be a scripture, a quote, a message from the heart or a piece of advice that has helped you through the many trials life holds. There will be a designated time in the ceremony for you to share your encouraging words.

Your friendship and mentorship has meant so much to us both and we hope you are able to be a part of our marriage ceremony. It is taking place in Waco, TX on July 11th at 7:11 p.m.. We will be giving you a call within the next few weeks to chat with you more about your special place in our ceremony.

We look forward to seeing you soon and hope your family has a wonderful holiday season!

Spotlight Wedding: Lindsey & Matt

First things first, take a look at this adorable couple!!

They were married June 20th of this past summer at the gorgeous St. Paul's Episcopal Church here in Waco, TX. This Church has a wonderful history - they still meet in the original building that was constructed in 1879!! The historic chapel created a wonderful backdrop for the ceremony -- not much decorating was necessary - the stained glass and original ornamentation was perfect for this couple. Classic beauty!The grounds also provided a wonderful place for some swanky pictures taken by none other than Sarah Hess with Fleeting Moments Studio!
I know... you are dying over the doors!!

So after the sentimental ceremony we headed over to the Earle - Harrison House and Nell Pape Gardens for a GREAT reception underneath the tent. But not without catching some incredible pictures of the sun setting behind the landmark plantation home.

Anyway... back to the party... It truly was just that, a party! An outdoor reception in the middle of June can be a challenge in the Texas heat but a cool front rolled in a day before the wedding and the guests were ready to take advantage of the cool breeze and romantic atmosphere.
Lindsey wanted to keep a very serene color palette and so we kept to ivories, golds and white. I think it all came together so well.

And at the end of the night they were sent off with tons of friends and lots of sparkle! :)

I have just been busy (bad excuse for not blogging, I realize) but I have some really great ideas and lots of pictures to share this week so get ready!!

Mr. V and I headed up to the panhandle to our hometown for a bit of relaxation friday before last and were able to stay until this past Tuesday... it. was. WONDERFUL. Cool weather, old friends, purple passions (the single most amazing non-alcoholic beverage you could ever consume), hometown football games, and familiarity. Literally, I just took a deep breath and dropped my blood pressure by mentally taking myself back there -- home.

I love that Mr. V and I have "home" in common. And one of my favorite quotes of his from this trip (besides the time that he used pinnacle correctly in a sentence and was super proud of himself only to reveal that he knew that word because it was his favorite brand of golf ball) was when he looked me in the eye and said, "I love taking you home." short. simple. and enough to make my heart jump in my chest. Even though my parents have long since moved away from our humble little town in the Texas panhandle, it will forever remain "home." I think it has to do with the memories I made there--- or maybe the self that I found -- or maybe the man that I fell in love with a bit more each day. We have quite a love story, maybe I will share it on the next rainy day. Regardless, that is where I have been - home - . And even though we have been back since Tuesday and I have put in countless hours of work since then I guess I just haven't completely made it back here yet.

I am going to leave you with a picture of us from the hometown heroes football game that we made it in time for!! There is nothing like rooting for the home team! Especially when they win!

OK, there is this INCREDIBLE wedding business symposium that i would really love to attend. It is called engage!08 and it was so wonderful the first go round, in June, that is sold old and they are offering a second conference for next week.

They boast having key speakers such as Sylvia Weinstock, Bee Kim from Weddingbee(squeak!), and Rebecca Grinnals and many, many more fantastic assets to the event industry. I like the idea of this symposium because it is brand new, they place emphasis on the real-life things that we all deal with (struggling economy) and it combines some of the most brilliant and inspiring minds.

If you are in the event industry or thinking about becoming a part of it, go check it out...maybe we could go together next year. Unfortunately it just wasn't in the (debit) cards this year.... here's to hoping for next year.

Let's just paint a picture: You have ventured to the local carnival for a night of re-capturing your inner child. The rides have been great, you have eaten more hot dogs and funnel cakes than you can count and the night still isn't over. You walk by one booth with a guy in red and white stripes handing out some of the most delicious smelling goodies EVER... what is it? Popcorn. No carnival, movie, or wedding?!? is the same without it.

Alright ladies, its truth circle time so everyone grab your carpet square and gather 'round...I've got a little something to share.

aahhh hem... (that was me clearing my throat)

My pants don't fit. We are talking an almost- muffin- top- because- I- refuse- to- buy- a- bigger- size ordeal here. I realize that it is from the cokes I nurse on a daily basis along with the stress of planning 12 weddings on top of mine, not to mention starting a new branch of my company and the fact that I hate going to the grocery store (hence Whataburger becomes gourmet)... but my dear bride/friend Tonya has ever so kindly agreed to kick her body into glamorizing mode with me because she, too would like to look faboo in her wedding gown (she is getting married next June, just a few weeks before me).

Tonya has revealed to me Michael Thurmond's book, "12 day Body Shaping Miracle" (pictured above) and I must say, I am halfway into the book and I am hooked and a firm believer. I almost had pro-thurmond buttons made today but I decided that might be taking it a little too far so, I just figured I would share it with you.

The first part of the book guides you in taking a quiz to determine your body type - from there you are given a specialized workout and diet plan that suits your body type's needs to guide you every step of the way. If you follow this, it is fool proof. I mean, have you not seen the man on Extreme Makeover (not home edition)?!? He works some miracles so I am hoping that mine comes from somewhere between the covers of this book. I start it all tomorrow so I will keep you posted on the results and my journey along the way.... I must warn you though, the last time I tried to kill my addiction to my beloved Coca Cola I came about 2 steps away from promising my first born for just a drop so this will definitely be a challenge for me.

So, Tonya and I already have workout dates planned for next week (written in the calendar AND in the ical so there is no escaping it) and I have a grocery list that I plan on tackling in the morning so, wish me luck! New Conception Board Alert!!

One of my favorite things about what I get to do is the idea and theme conception part.... I don't get to do this with every one of my special couples but those that either choose a package with it included or add it to whatever other package they might have chosen let me spend a couple hours picking their brain and sort through their clippigns to get wonderful ideas so that I can create a conception board that really embraces their ideas and takes them to a completely different place.

It challenges my creativity every single time and allows me to play outside of the box. It really is amazing how much it helps the couple have the vision for their wedding, the other vendors see the big picture and me to have a honed in picture for our direction. It is, by far, the best tool to help me create the best team of professionals to produce that event... Plus, it gives me a great excuse to flip through magazines!!

Ok..I'll stop now and let you take a look at direction we are taking for Tonya and Ross.

The entire board... Tonya wanted a black and white wedding with pink accents (of all shades), with a certain old hollywood feel... hence the feathers and Audrey Hepburn. We decided that, if she could, Audrey would definitely be in attendance - and she would be jealous of our taste! :)

a few of the details -- killer black vases with a signature flower pink pink anemones.We are also using pink peonies!! And..I came across this adorable high heel and had to add it to the board. Tonya is planning on having her bridesmaids in dresses that are a combo of black and white... I just thought a pink shoe could give it a bit of pop! And notice the fun cake on the top right corner!! Tonya's FMIL is so gracious to be baking the cake for her. Yay for crafty MILs!

I am all about the stories.... love stories, funny stories, stories of cultures, stories of history, family stories.... I love them all!! So, when I stumbled upon this on the Design*Sponge blog (another one of my favorites) I just couldn't resist sharing it with you.

I found this on the knot as well today... I am really struggling when it comes to choosing table linens..... I am guessing it comes from the fact that I have designed the most perfect one in my head and, to my knowledge, it doesn't exist. Not to mention that my job entails picking out gobs of gorgeous linens for clients on a daily basis.

The look I am going for is light and airy, since we will be outside but it also has to have lots of personality. I saw the laser cut curtain above and thought, BINGO! I decided to find said curtain and make it my own. So, my handy friend, google and I got down to business....

Results: found it on Amazon for a whopping $123.00 a pop!! Yowza! So I decided to find out why this bad boy wasn't cheap. Come to find out, it is a Toord Boontje design straight from Milan. So, I will put the desire for it away and hope for something a lot cheaper....

well, maybe after I share a few more pictures for you to drool over....now that you have a bit of a feel for what I am going for when it comes to our tables, any suggestions for some linens??

Look what I stumbled across on The Knot today!! They are escort cards, how delightfully playful! (lucky they are in my colors too...) I've done it since I was little and let me just tell you, when I happened upon the wonderful Victoria with Roses blog, I squeaked! A letterpress giveaway??? Say it isn't so... and by Dingbat Press?? Ah, music... how I love thee.

Mr. V and I have decided to go a bit more modern on the music end of our ceremony. We decided early on that Canon in D was not an option (no offense). I have heard that song played a lot and while it is beautiful and, as a wedding coordinator, one of the first songs I suggest to help those bridesmaids pace their steps... it is just "not us."

So, here are some songs that I am wanting to throw into the mix.... I have no clue exactly where we are putting them so I am definitely open to input but, I just wanted to share.... if you want to steal a few for yourself, go for it... just don't tell me... i have this complex about being unique :).

Ok, our first song is off of Jason Mraz's new CD. It is his duet with Colbie Caillat titled "Lucky".
Love it... I mean, hello, the lyrics say "Lucky I'm in love with my best friend"

Number 2 has been a favorite song of mine for a couple of years now... many of you heard it on an Old Navy commercial last fall but it is by Ingrid Michaelson and is titled "The Way I Am." I love the true to life love it describes and the quirky (i.e. "I'll buy you rogaine, when you start losing all your hair.") lyrics would be perfect to help me not boo hoo the whole way down the aisle.

pick 3 is one I heard off of one of my favorite T.V. shows, One Tree Hill(team peyton&lucas!), and is titled "We are Man and Wife." (how perfect, no?) The artist is Michelle Featherstone. For all of you other OTH fans, this is the song Haley walked down the aisle to at her and Nathan's 2nd wedding :).

The 4th is the song Mr. V sang at the wedding in summer of 2007 that marked the beginning of this chapter of our relationship. It is by Andy Davis, titled "Bigger than Us." Man, it gets me EVERY time.... I wish Mr. V could sing it but, he will kill me for saying this, he is a big softy and I just don't think he could make it through it.

And number 5 is By Dave Barnes.... Although there are tons of songs of his that could be used at a wedding, I love the one titled " I Have and I Always Will". The only downfal is that Mr. V and I hate the first line... it just doesn't suit our relationship.... we really aren't scared. But, man, the rest of this song is just mesmerizing and absolutely pure... yea, pure, I guess that is the best word.

I'm grouchy today.
Why?
I'm not real sure.... maybe because i feel fat, maybe because i'm procrastinating and I hate myself for it, maybe because my office has gray colored walls, maybe because people think my job is a walk in the park & anyone can do it, maybe because it's 85 freakin degrees outside in the middle of September, and maybe because Mr. V forgot to call me this morning to wake me up so I slept until 10:30...

yea, maybe.

Alright, a lot of my girls (and by girls I mean clients, brides, whatever.... I call them girls because it makes me feel like we are friends and trust me, these girls want me to be their friends :) ) are having some sort of dessert/ candy/ cupcake bar at their wedding. And guess what... so am I :) Mr. V and I will be serving dessert and only dessert at our reception (more to come on that later). So, of course, I want a cute way to display such sweets so that my guests salivate as much as I do!

That being said, combined with the knowledge I have aquired and my AVID wedding blog reading I present to you...... drum roll please..... eye candy (pun intended)

ok, our first set of yummies comes from the blog Style Me Pretty. Yesterday she featured dessert bars designed by a delectable company named "Oh how Charming" (wishing I would have thought of that for my company name instead of... well... my name). Here are a few of my faves!

Advice

I give lots of advice... to clients, to friends, to associated professionals & to myself. For some reason the advice I give to everyone else tends to be a lot better than the advice I give to myself. Ever wish that you followed your own advice?? If I did, I would be the most well-rounded, organized, understanding, easy going and selfless woman in the world. And let me tell ya folks, I am far from that. I am a moody, fly off the handle, throw a fit, stress -out and pout kind of girl but I also care more than words can express, love to laugh, constantly think about others needs and dream big. Balancing me is quite a feat.... but, I can't help but think God knew what he was doing when he made me. It has been beyond amazing how all of what I consider as my "character flaws" have played into some really great life experiences that I have used to help others.

As you know, Mr.V is going to be a youth minister.... often times I wonder what God was doing when he challenged me to be a youth minister's wife. I most certainly don't have it all figured out or even half-way figured out. When youth come to me with problems or questions, I am constantly relying on my past experiences and what little knowledge I have of faith to dish out, yet again, advice. I want to be that wonderful addition to Mr. V's ministry, that cool minister's wife that sets a great example. I don't want to be perfect by any means but I do want to be a good example.

Maybe it's ok to know you are flawed. The minute you think you aren't is the minute you stop working towards a better you. I always want to want a better me... day by day... I want to show growth, be challenged and complete tasks.

Dear cyberworld,
I never thought I would be a blogger... actually made fun of those who had slight obsessions with online journals.. for some its reading deep, thoughtful journalism, for others (by others i mean newlywed Baylor graduates) it is writing about what you made for dinner for you and your newly married husband -- for me -- it's to rant. About nothing really, just funny things that happen whatever I happen to find online, the ridiculous amount of wedding and design websites that I look at every day and the quirky things that I run into as a wedding planner turned bride. Trust me, my loverboy and family will thank me -- by posting here, maybe I won't call them to tell them the unfunny things that I crack up about. So here I am....a blogger. feel free to judge. :)
